Donating clothes and toys

Christmas is often equal with lots of new stuff being brought into the home, and living with two kids in a small apartment that can be a bit of a space problem. So I always try to set away a single day for sorting through our stuff to find the things that can be donated or should be tossed.

It’s amazing how much that can accumulate even in a small apartment and especially the kids end up with a lot of toys they have outgrown.

I think it’s good for the kids to know their old toys and clothes can be useful, so we bring it to a local charity shop that help low income parents.

And, Christmas is the perfect reason to go through those old boxes and find the stuff you never use. Because let’s be honest. Do I really need 10 pair of high heels when I can only wear sneakers? Do I really need to keep these very dusty notebooks that I haven’t looked at for years?

And while it sometimes feels a bit hard throwing the stuff out, I always feel so much lighter when the clutter is gone (even the hidden clutter).

I always use the same method with both me and the kids.

Remove the easy stuff first: so the broken, stained, ruined stuff. All the things that are trash.

Divide the rest into three piles:
– donate
– maybe
– keep

Put all the donate stuff into a box then go to the maybe pile.

Look at each thing and ask yourself why you’re keeping it. My aim is always to have about 70% of the maybe pile in the donate box when done.

Then go through the keep pile. Odds are a few things will end in the donate box once you’ve gotten through the maybe pile and are in the groove.

Then we bag it all up and go donate it and we’re ready for Christmas to arrive. And it feels great to greet the new year mostly clutter free.

Do you do a donate “run” before Christmas?

Merry Christmas
Love, Tea

  1. I love this idea. I think it’s important to note that you don’t just have to donate it to a Thrift Store! My boyfriend is a bit of a shoe hoarder and he’s finally realized he doesn’t need all these shoes and he actually took them down to a local homeless shelter and donated them. Helping the homeless with donations is a really great idea during the winter months.

  2. This is such a great idea 🙂 I have several clear-outs through the year, usually when the seasons change and also when i move house which I have been doing quite a lot on the last four years! I also live in a small flat so space is tight – anything I get for the holidays needs it’s own space even if that means saying goodbye to old stuff! X

  3. I love this idea. There’s always something I find so relaxing about a good decluttering session, and before Christmas, where a lot of accumulate more stuff, sounds like the ideal time to do so.
