Questions About Writing

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I have! I remember always writing little stories. I didn’t really do anything else with all my stories, they just collected dust in a box. Last year I decided to finally take the plunge and write my first paranormal romance book.

How do you come up with the titles for your books?

I like to find something in my book to act as the title or inspire the title. Bite Me Again and A Hairy Situation were both comments made in the book. Pointed Love was more of a hint to something in the story.

Plotter or pantser or somewhere in between?

Definitely more of a pantser. I have a vague outline, with a few things I want to happen, but from there it’s a write-and-see-what-happens journey!

How much do you research for your books?

I do a little bit, but the great thing about paranormal romance is that I don’t need as much as if I was doing historical fiction. My google searches vary anywhere from what is the temperature in Scotland in February to plant poisons to what were English farms like in 1800’s.

What were your favorite part and your least favorite part of the publishing journey?

I have two things that make me just so incredibly happy: hearing from readers that they enjoyed my book(s), and getting the first physical copy of my book. My least favorite part is definitely marketing. Indie authors have to market their own books, and some of my favorite authors do a great job and make it look so easy. I am not there yet! It’s a bit of a learning curve. As an introvert, I really do not like talking about myself or pushing myself on people, but I need to in order to promote my books. I’m working on it and am still figuring out my voice.

Questions About Your Books

How many books have you written? Which is your favorite?

I have my third book, Pointed Love, releasing 3/1/23. I am currently writing the fourth book in the series. Favorite? That’s hard to pick…probably Bite Me Again (book 1), as it was my first published book.

What is the future for the characters? Will there be a sequel?

I’m trying to write this series as interconnected stand alones, so each book will have a different main character/couple  but previous characters will make an appearance. I’m toying with an idea of a whole family/Clan vacation at some point, maybe as a bonus short story.

Do you write listening to music? If so, what music inspired or accompanied this current book?

I absolutely have music playing while I’m writing. I don’t like it too quiet when I’m working (TV is too distracting of a background noise for me). I normally listen to rock or alternative music. I did listen to some electric strings classical music while writing Pointed Love. Emma just seemed like a classical music type of listener.

How many plot ideas are just waiting to be written? Can you tell us about one?

I have ideas for books 5 and 6. Book 5 I think will be Merri/Gawain. Book 6 is leaning towards Gage, the town’s Sheriff. I’m not quite sure of his mate yet, but I have an idea. There are a few secondary characters that might come out in those books and later get their own as well.

Questions About Reading

Do you listen to audiobooks?

I listen to audiobooks a little bit. I find that I have a quirk of needing to read the book first and then I can listen to the audiobook.

How many bookshelves are in your house?

3: I  have one in the office area, and my kids each have one in their room. My goal is to get these big bookcases from Ikea and set them up in the office.

Do you prefer paper or digital books?

I love paper books! However, due to always wanting to have a book on hand (and forgetting to grab one a lot of the time before I leave the house), most of my books are digital.

What genres do you prefer to read?

Romance! I like contemporary and paranormal for the most part.

If a new book comes out in a series, do you reread the whole series?

I have done this…a few times…okay, a lot of times. If it’s a new-to-me author and I read the last book recently, I will not always reread. If it’s been a year or so between books, I will do a reread.

Personal Questions

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I love baking and photography. During the week, between work and school schedules, it’s mostly eat dinner and get homework done, so weekends we try to do something as a family. We like to find new things that we haven’t done before (new park, new local museum, new coffee shop, etc.)

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A writer or an archaeologist. I have too many allergies to the outside world to be an archaeologist.

Do you prefer tea or coffee or something else?

Coffee! I do have a few teas that I enjoy, normally at night when I’m winding down for bed.

Would you rather watch a movie or read a book?

Read a book for sure!

Do you have any pets?

I have a dog. Currently we have a retired greyhound.

Thank you to Harper, for joining me for this week interview. And all of you, remember to go follow Harper on social media and grab a copy of her books.
