Romantasy as a genre definition is fairly new, and as such, there is no standard definition of it, and I constantly see people define it differently. 

Today, I Googled Romantasy and got so many different definitions from reputable sources, which just goes to show that no one can agree. 

With that in mind, I wanted to write a bit about how I define Romantasy. 

My definition: 

-Romance set in a fantasy world- 

This is the simplest definition of the word. But, it’s more than just that. 

Just because the world is fantasy won’t (in my definition) make it Romantasy. 

The fantasy part has to play into the plot. 

So you have the Romance part with the HEA requirement + the fantasy elements directly affecting the plot, like magic or beasts. 

On top of that, for me, there have to be a “quest” of some kind. This can be revenging some evil, taking the throne from the tyrant, breaking a curse… you get the idea. 

There has to be some kind of fantasy-related plotline with the romance. 

In The World of Houses Trilogy, they are taking down tyrants. 

In The Glass Thief, they are stopping a man from destroying the kingdom. 

In The Scarlet Huntress, they are hunting a monster. 

So to me, Romantasy is a perfect mix of all we love from Romance and all we love from Fantasy, melted together into a perfect blend of love and adventure. 

And honestly, I freaking love it.
